Its origins are unclear but we know that it does not come from Auxerre. It is a distinct variety from Pinot blanc. Auxerrois is a white grape variety from the Moselle hillsides where it has been planted since the late 19th century. The people of Lorraine are said to have protected the variety from the German occupation by exporting it to the nurseries near Auxerre, hence its name. Auxerrois was planted in Alsace in the second half of the 20th century.
